Troubleshooting
- I opened Barograph and no window appeared.
- That's expected: Barograph lives in the menu bar. Option-click any of its items, or open Barograph again from Applications or Spotlight, to show the window.
- Some menu bar items are missing.
- On Macs with a notch, macOS hides menu bar items that don't fit. Barograph notices and offers Use Compact Item in its right-click menu, which folds every reading into one item.
- I removed every item from the menu bar.
- Open Barograph again from Applications or Spotlight. When no item is visible, that brings them back.
- A sensor says it is unavailable.
- Sensor names differ between chip generations, and Barograph never guesses. Tell us your Mac model and macOS version so we can add your chip.
- How much is Barograph itself using?
- Right-click any item and hold Option to show Self-Monitor, which lists Barograph's own CPU, memory, and wakeups.
- How do I quit?
- Right-click any Barograph item in the menu bar and choose Quit. Closing the window keeps Barograph running.
Questions
- Is Barograph free?
- Yes. Barograph is free to download and use, with no account and no in-app purchases.
- Which Macs does it run on?
- Any Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later) running macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Sensor names differ between chip generations; if a sensor isn't available on your Mac, Barograph says so instead of guessing.
- What about Intel Macs?
- Barograph is built only for Apple silicon. Much of what it shows, such as performance and efficiency clusters and chip power, doesn't exist on Intel Macs.
- Why isn't it on the Mac App Store?
- Reading the chip's power, frequency, and temperature counters needs system interfaces the App Store sandbox doesn't allow. Barograph is signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple instead.
- Does it need my administrator password?
- No. Barograph reads everything without special rights and installs no helper tool.
- Can it control my fans?
- Not today. Barograph reports fan speeds but doesn't change them.
- Where is my history stored, and how do I delete it?
- On your Mac only, in Barograph's folder in Application Support. History keeps the last 24 hours and prunes itself; Delete History in Settings removes all of it at once.
- How do updates work?
- Barograph checks for new versions with Sparkle, the standard updater for Mac apps outside the App Store. Choose Check for Updates… in the menu at any time, or turn on Check for Updates Automatically in Settings to check once a day. Automatic checks are off until you turn them on, a check sends no information about your Mac, and an update is installed only when you choose to.
- Can I script it?
- Yes, through Shortcuts actions or the optional local metrics endpoint, which serves Prometheus text and JSON to this Mac only.
